As many people in who live in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania are aware, this year marks the 250th anniversary of the city’s existence. From a settlement it has grown into a major city of the United States, but despite this remarkable achievment, the actual day recognized as that the city’s founding is passing without fanfare. Nearly all of the official celebrations have already occurred, and other than a few mentions, there is likely to be little acknowledgement of this date.  Rather, Tuesday, Novmber 25, 2008 will be more associated locally with funerals of Catherine Baker Knoll and Samuel K. Hicks instead of being remembered for the historic occasion. While the cold weather precludes much of a celebration, it is disheartening to think the actual date of the 250th anniversary will go without fanfare. As a result, I will celebrate today, as the 250th anniversary of the city that I was born and raised in — and still live in — will only come once and will never pass again. Happy Birthday, Pittsburgh!
